UK fined £2.4bn over customs fraud

HMRC has rejected claims by the European Commission that the UK owes the EU over £2bn in customs duty and VAT. The EU's anti-fraud unit, Olaf, claims the UK allowed Chinese criminal gangs to systematically undervalue goods imported into the EU through British ports, avoiding billions of pounds in duty that should have been paid to Brussels. The EC fined Britain £2.4bn yesterday, claiming Britain’s failure to act on warnings first issued ten years ago cost Brussels €2.7bn in lost revenue. The UK Government yesterday said it “did not recognise” the figure.
