HMRC claims it will write off tax bills for some state pensioners

26-08-2024

HM Revenue & Customs has announced it will write off tax bills for certain state pensioners affected by frozen income tax thresholds. As many as 400,000 retirees may face tax liabilities due to these thresholds, with the triple-lock increase potentially pushing the state pension above the personal allowance of £12,570 by April 2026. HMRC stated it would not pursue "tiny" tax amounts, but experts like Dominic Arnold from Evelyn Partners questioned this claim, stating: "Any suggestion that HMRC does not apply de minimis limits to collecting or repaying tax would be contrary to its own guidance." Stuart Ritchie from the Institute of Chartered Accountants noted that the limit for non-collection is around £100.
