Romanian police have apprehended a gang suspected of executing a sophisticated scam that exploited stolen data to fraudulently claim millions in repayments from the UK tax office. According to HMRC, the scammers accessed personal data of British taxpayers through phishing operations, leading to bogus claims for tax refunds. HMRC has contacted around 100,000 customers regarding attempted access to their accounts, emphasising that their systems were not compromised by a cyber-attack.
