Inheritance tax chaos for grieving families

27-11-2024

The recent changes to inheritance tax introduced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves have raised concerns among families, with experts warning of potential legal battles over estates. Solicitors and tax specialists have indicated that the new rules could lead to significant disparities in tax liabilities among siblings, resulting in disputes. Chris Lawrence from Forvis Mazars stated: “Where family members are inheriting assets with different levels of inheritance tax, there's a risk they will now end up in court challenging their entitlements.” The changes could see the number of estates paying inheritance tax rise from 28,000 to an estimated 391,000 by 2030, with some families facing tax bills as high as 91%. Legal costs could escalate into the hundreds of thousands, further complicating the grieving process for families.
