HMRC has spent more than £610,000 subsidising home energy bills for civil servants who work from home. Annual payments have more than doubled from about £95,000 in 2022 to £211,000 in the year to April 2026. The department said the subsidy is only available to staff whose contractual workplace is their home, not employees working remotely as part of hybrid arrangements. HMRC has 5,259 contractual home workers, around 7% of its workforce. William Yarwood of the TaxPayers’ Alliance said: "Ministers should end these perks, get officials back to the office and stop treating taxpayers like a bottomless money pit."
