HMRC delays mean many could miss deadline

Accountants are warning of huge delays in clients receiving the unique taxpayer reference code they need to sign up to self-assessment from HMRC leading to concerns they could miss the self-assessment deadline in January. Paul Heywood-Schiefer, an accountant at Blick Rothenberg, said one client still didn’t have his code after applying in June. It usually takes ten days. “We have seen lots of cases of clients waiting months and it has been a real bugbear,” he said. “It’s just been a big black hole of frustration.” The ICAEW says tax can be paid using a national insurance number but professional accountancy software may be needed to make sure it is done correctly. But Claire Roberts from Moore Kingston Smith warned against trying the workaround saying it “would be far too risky” doing it without the aid of an accountant. HMRC said it was “sorry that we can’t get to everyone more quickly”
